Dr Paul Duignan and Clinical Supervision

Dr Paul Duignan draws on his deep knowledge of a wide range of mental health models and frameworks, bringing this breadth into his supervision practice. Paul focuses on the key issues practitioners face in their client work, while also supporting them to manage stress and maintain their own wellbeing.

Paul’s Tools for Living In Supervision

As part of his clinical practice Paul has developed a set of over forty Dr Paul’s Tools For Living. These can be used by those he supervises in their everyday practice where they add value to their current approaches and methods. They are practical tools which can be applied in a wide range of clinical settings. The video below is from Paul’s Psychology Today webpage briefly describing his approach to working with his psychology clients.

After sitting down with Paul for about thirty minutes I had the following realisation. He provided exactly what I didn’t know I needed, concrete tools that I could apply and implement.

Structured Five step approach to Supervision

Paul’s supervision practice follows a five-step process:

  1. What are the key issues you are facing with your current clients.

  2. What are the options for formulating what is happening for them, considering intervention approaches, and assessing how best to manage risk.

  3. What are the areas in which you want to develop your professional skills and how can you pursue these.

  4. What do you need to do in terms of managing stress and promoting your wellbeing.

  5. What is working in your role teaching you about developing a deeper understanding of life.

I come out from a session with hands-on tools to take away that I have already been helped to practice, and I can clearly see the can be applied.

Online or in person

Sessions are in person in Wellington or online anywhere in New Zealand. Group supervision online with several mental health workers is also an option. In addition, training sessions on how mental health workers can use Dr Paul’s Tools For Living as part of their professional development can also be arranged.
