Client Feedback on Dr Paul Duignan’s Clinical Psychology Work

I am a clinical psychologist. Our job goes beyond just counselling. It is to firstly fully assess the exact problem a person is facing when they feel that they are having psychological challenges. There is no point having a lot of sessions with someone if you have not worked out what is going on for them. In my first session, I identify what is happening for them and we then develop a plan for how we can move forward in the most effective way to help them make the changes they want to make in their lives.

Client Feedback

Desperate after seeing a previous psychologist who was technically proficient but lacking in genuine empathy, I reached out to Paul. He came to my rescue during my time of greatest need . . . providing a safe space to explore the overwhelming thoughts and feelings I was experiencing. While he certainly offered practical tools and cognitive techniques, as any skilled psychologist would, his most impactful contribution was his ability to help me reframe the entire struggle. He consistently emphasised that life is a long journey, inherently filled with ups and downs, challenges and periods of difficulty. He proposed that the crucial question to ask oneself at any point is not “Why is this happening to me?” but rather “What is life trying to teach me at this moment?” This subtle yet powerful shift in perspective helped me move from feeling like a passive, helpless “patient’ merely suffering from a problem to viewing myself as an active agent engaged in a brutal battle, called upon to learn and grow even in hardship. This empowering mindset, nurtured by Paul’s consistent empathy, genuine care ad unwavering non-judgmental support, became a potent force in my recovery, helping me to reclaim a sense of agency.

Paul helped us work through a devastatingly difficult time. We were looking for someone to work with who has broad skills, maturity and intelligence, and Paul fit the bill. We also found him to be likeable and relaxed, which engendered trust from the outset. His gentle, encouraging manner, insights and experience were invaluable, and he was able to capture both the emotional landscape and the train of events quickly, and accordingly we felt we made progress quite quickly. Paul requests a certain amount of ‘homework’ and notetaking, which helped us to solidify the shifts we were making in terms of ideas and practices. With past therapists I have not managed to maintain any shifts long term, but having regular practice and something written certainly helps. He also challenged us in some areas, but always with great care and good purpose, and these were probably the times that brought about the greatest shifts. I have recommended Paul a couple of times to friends, and I do not hesitate to do so.
— Relationship Counselling
Paul really helped me recover from burnout and to manage the immediate symptoms in a very supportive and objective manner with no judgement. Paul helped lay a practical foundation for recovery going forward, using a framework of mindfulness, self-awareness & self-improvement. Support from Paul has been phenomenally helpful in not only recovering from burnout, but to avoid getting to that stage again through improved self-awareness and investing in regular mindfulness. Support from Paul has clearly been tailored to my needs. And has helped explore and understand the root cause of some less constructive behaviours and feelings that contributed to reaching burnout. Support has included very useful guidance on techniques to utilise, to drive positive change. Even in the short term, the framework and guidance from Paul is already resulting in a much more decisive approach to action on a day to day basis. And being more aware through mindfulness of interaction with others. Thanks to Paul I am experiencing a greater clarify of mind, better control of which thoughts I choose to focus on and a greater ease in simply observing & managing other distractions. Overall this is resulting in a greater sense of clarity, confidence and objectivity.

Therapy with Paul is anchored in insightful, productive weekly sessions, but it’s much more than that. His support and feedback throughout the week multiply my progress, and the tools he provides focus me on concrete steps to overcome obstacles. The value-added over most therapy is phenomenal.

I feel positive coming out of our sessions because it is the first time I have come out from a session with a psychologist with hands-on tools to take away that I have already been helped to practice with, and I know how they could be applied to my situation. So it is an empowering feeling when you are a bit lost on a certain area, and you now have tools so you can be constructive and look in a new way and try a new approach. I always felt somewhat defensive and blocked about asking for help from a professional up until now regarding my mental health. I would say that your sessions are great because I don’t feel I am being told I need to change or looked down on. You open up options to think smarter, which is great for people who may have been told they have to fit in and ‘need to get mental health support’. This is really cool, how different this is as an approach, compared to my own psychologist experiences before.
